I'm Sharmila Basu Thakur, a cancer survivor and passionate lover of food, culture, and the simple yet profound beauty of everyday life.
My journey has been rich with colours, traditions, and stories. A gold medalist in Philosophy, I began my career as a professor before being drawn into journalism, where words, visuals, and voices unite to shape narratives.
Over the years, I have worn many hats: a communication specialist, editor, mentor, traveller, and trained Odissi dancer. But one thread has remained constant: my love for creating and sharing meaningful moments.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, my life took a sharp, unexpected turn. After being diagnosed with breast cancer, I found myself in a coma, underwent chemotherapy, and faced unimaginable odds. Yet, even in that darkness, I clung to one thing: my desire to create, to connect, and to continue.
COVID-19 uncovered many talents we thought we didn’t possess,” I often say. For me, it revealed a resilience I never knew I had and provided clarity to pursue everything I had once postponed: dance, cooking, travel, and the joy of living with purpose.
As the former editor of Sananda, the esteemed lifestyle magazine from the Anandabazar Group, I’ve spent years curating stories that speak to the heart, across food, fashion, home, and wellness. My passion for lifestyle is layered and ever-growing. It’s where food, art, and culture continuously converse.
Whether it’s a lovingly cooked meal, a thoughtful story, or an inspiring conversation, I believe in celebrating life in all its flavours. And so, Foodfarishta was born; not just as a blog or channel but as a heartfelt space where recipes meet rituals, travel meets tradition, and stories meet smiles.
When I’m not exploring a bustling kitchen, you’ll find me lost in a book, dancing to the rhythm of life, travelling to hidden corners of the world, or sipping a cup of tea in a cosy nook, dreaming up new adventures. This space is my open table — and you are most warmly invited. Join me as we cook, travel, laugh, and celebrate the beautiful, imperfect, delicious journey called life.
From heirloom secrets to newfound favourites, each dish tells a story.
These featured recipes are close to my heart, and I’m sharing them from my kitchen to yours.
